Who we are and what you'll find here.
What Is United Cancer Network? +
United Cancer Network (UCAN) connects people affected by cancer with trusted support organizations near them and across the country. That means real, practical help: support groups, rides to treatment, help with bills, lodging near care, camps and experiences, wellness activities and more.
We are not a hospital and we do not provide medical care. We help you find the people and organizations who can help, wherever you are.
Who Is UCAN For? +
Anyone touched by cancer. That includes people in treatment or beyond it, loved ones, whole families, and caregivers. Much of the site lets you say who you are looking for, so the results fit your situation, whether you are searching for yourself, a loved one, your family, or as a caregiver.
Does It Cost Anything to Use? +
No. Searching, browsing, and talking with Ren are free. Many of the organizations we list offer their programs at no cost too, and each listing points you to the organization itself so you can confirm the details.
What Kinds of Support Can I Find? +
Support is organized across a wide range of needs, helping you quickly find the resources, services and opportunities that matter most right now:
- Practical and financial: financial help, housing, transportation, scholarships, and products.
- Body and treatment: physical support, prevention and screening, and hereditary testing.
- Mind and spirit: emotional support, camps, and experiences.
- Learn, connect and give: advocacy and education, research, and foundations.
There is also a wellness library with books, meditations, nutrition resources, virtual support sessions and creative activities for kids, plus a curated list of walks, runs and fundraisers if you want to take part in something.
What Is Near & Now? +
Near & Now is our local news and events experience: trusted support groups, wellness classes, gatherings and practical help happening near you, refreshed every week. You can even choose your own area within your state to see what is closest to home.
Can I Save the Support I Find? +
Yes. Support Guides are a gentle way to gather the support you need. Choose what matters most right now and who it is for, and we'll show you trusted places to reach. Everything you save lives there, yours to keep, print, or share with the people helping you.
Searching Near You and Nationwide
How search works, close to home or across the country.
Can I Search Just My Area, or the Whole Country? +
Both, and you choose. By default we show local and national options together. You can also narrow to local only or national only before you search, and that choice carries through to your results.
Will You Find My Town, Even If It's Small? +
Yes. Our place lookup covers every town in the country, including the very small ones, and it is forgiving of misspellings. When you name a city or town, local results are scoped to roughly sixty miles around it, so nearby options count too.
If you don't name a place, we'll ask which state you are in rather than guessing.
How Do You Choose Which Organizations to Show? +
Results are matched to what you actually asked, not just to keywords. If you ask about transportation, we'll still find the organization that describes itself as offering rides to treatment or gas cards. Local organizations are favored when they truly serve your area, and if you name a specific organization, it comes first.
What If I Need to Talk to Someone Right Now? +
Five national helplines are always close at hand on the site: the National Cancer Institute, the American Cancer Society (available around the clock), CancerCare, the Cancer Support Community, and the Patient Advocate Foundation. They are free and staffed by people who understand cancer. Find them all on our Help page.

Ren, Your Support Guide
Ask in your own words. Ren finds real places that can help.
Who Is Ren? +
Ren is the support guide on unitedcancernetwork.org. Type what you need in your own words, and he matches you with trusted cancer support organizations near you and across the country.
Ren is built for one job and does it carefully. He is not a general chatbot, he does not chat about the news or write your essay, and he never gives medical advice. What he does is help you find support, safely.
Why Isn't Ren a General Chatbot? +
On purpose, and we think it's his best quality. Ren does not diagnose, counsel, or invent support out of thin air. He helps you find and use support that real organizations provide and real people on our team have reviewed.
We believe the world does not need another AI trying to become the trusted person in your life. It needs the trusted people in your life, your care team, your family, the organizations who do this work every day, to be easier to reach. Connecting you to them is Ren's whole job, and he does not wander from it.
Where Do Ren's Answers Come From? +
Every organization, program, and helpline Ren shows you comes from UCAN's directory, gathered and reviewed by our team before it ever appears in a result. Ren finds the right entries; he does not write his own.
That distinction matters. Ren never stitches together pieces of different listings or fills gaps with a guess. What you see is the complete entry our team approved, and every listing points you to the organization itself so you can confirm details with the source.
What Can I Ask Ren? +
Anything about cancer support, the way you'd say it to a friend. A few examples:
- “Rides to treatment in Iowa”
- “We can't afford these medical bills”
- “Support groups for caregivers near Omaha”
- “Somewhere to stay near the hospital during treatment”
- “Recipes for chemo nausea”
- “A 5k I can run for my sister”
Ren also remembers the last couple of turns of your conversation, so if you ask about support groups and then say “what about Nebraska?”, he understands you mean support groups in Nebraska.
What If Ren Can't Find a Good Match? +
He tells you so, plainly. If nothing in our directory truly fits what you asked, Ren says he doesn't have a good answer rather than handing you the nearest thing that merely looks right. We built him that way because a wrong door wastes energy you may not have to spare.
When that happens he will suggest another way to ask, and free national helplines staffed by people who understand cancer are always a tap away.
Does Ren Give Medical Advice? +
No, never. Ren is a guide, not a doctor. He will not compare treatments, interpret symptoms, answer prognosis questions, or tell you whether a doctor is good. Those questions deserve your care team, who know you and your situation.
What Ren will do is take the need behind your question seriously: point you to the right next step, share questions worth asking, offer the second opinion path or the finder for NCI designated cancer centers, and put free national helplines in front of you.
If you describe an urgent symptom like chest pain or trouble breathing, Ren's answer is simple and immediate: contact your care team now, and call 911 if it is severe.
What Won't Ren Help With? +
Ren stays inside his purpose. Ask him about the weather, sports scores, or homework and he will say kindly that it is outside what he can help with, and remind you what he is built for. He also holds a firm, calm boundary around abusive or explicit messages.
Either way he never scolds, and the door stays open for your next question about support.
How We Keep This Space Safe
Safety comes before search, every single time.
What Happens If I Tell Ren I'm Not Okay? +
Ren checks every message for safety before anything else. If you share fear, grief, or overwhelm, he responds with warmth first: a gentle acknowledgment, free cancer support lines, support groups, and local emotional support options, ready when you are.
If a message suggests you or someone else might be in danger, Ren sets everything else aside and shows crisis lines only, clearly and prominently, with nothing on the page to bury them. When a message could be read either way, Ren always chooses the safer reading.

Who Checks Ren's Work? +
Our team does, constantly. Ren's scope, his word lists, and every response he is allowed to give were written and reviewed by our team, and his safety behavior is tested against a battery of automated checks that run every time anything changes.
This reflects what the emerging research on AI in health and wellbeing keeps finding: these tools earn trust when they are narrow in scope, built on expert-reviewed content, tested rigorously, and overseen by people. That is the standard Ren is held to.
Is What I Type to Ren Private? +
Yes. Our records note the kind of response shown, for example that a search ran or that support lines were offered, and our analytics pick up on search keywords so we can keep offering the best support possible. We never keep your full conversation, and never anything that identifies you.
Do I Need an Account to Use UCAN or Ren? +
You can search, browse, and talk with Ren without signing up for anything. Some features that save things for you, like Support Guides, may invite you to keep your saved items so they are there when you come back.
How Do I Share Feedback or Suggest an Organization? +
We would love that. Parts of the site, like Near & Now, have a feedback form built right in, and every note is read by the people building UCAN. If you know a trusted organization we should list, tell us at Submit Local Support and we will take a look.
